History Ch Sheltieland Laird o'Page's Hill was a dark sable dog bred by Catherine Coleman, by Ch Mowgli ROM out of Sheltieland Little Ideal, and whelped May 17, 1937. He won the ASSA National Specialty in 1938 from the specials class. (He must have finished shortly before the show, as he was shown in the catalog with no Ch title.) He is Line CHE Part IIa and Family 3.
Laird had been purchased by William Gallagher at some time before the National, but at the time of the show, the Page's Hill affix had not yet been added to his name. He was one of the very few American Shelties to be exported back to England, where he appears in the November 1938 Gazette and earned Stud Book number 121VV. In 1943 he was bred to Balmedie Juno and produced at least two puppies who bred on, Helensdale Biddy (s b) and Golden Rod of Marl (d). The latter sired Eng Ch Wonder Lad of Eleth, putting Am Ch Sheltieland Laird o'Page's Hill (as well as his sire and grandsire) in the English Charts. His more lasting contribution, however, came through Helensdale Biddy. Bred to Fydell Startler, this bitch produced Helensdale Daisy, the dam (by Anvil Model) of Helensdale Flash, a tri bitch who, when bred to Helensdale Callum, produced Helensdale Nighean Dhu and Helensdale Mhairi Dhu, a pair of tricolor bitches with outstanding producing records. Mhairi Dhu produced Eng Ch Alasdair of Tintobank, one of the top producing sons of Eng Ch Helensdale Ace, and a dog probably behind most English Shelties today.
