History of Ch Larkspur's Finalist of Pocono

Ch Larkspur's Finalist of Pocono was a blue merle dog, whelped March 23, 1949. The litter, which contained 2 defective whites and 2 blues, was by Ch Bil-Bo-Dot Blue Flag of Pocono ROM out of Ch Larkspur of Pocono CDX ROM - Larkspur's last litter. Larkspur was almost 10 years old by this time, and had a poor milk supply - possibly due to breast cancer. Betty Whelen managed to save only a single male from the litter, and that one was stunted and suffered from rickets and mange as a puppy. By the time of the Westminster show he had recovered enough that Betty entered him in the Novice class, as much from sentiment as anything, as Larkspur puppies had at that point won well for 9 successive years. Finalist kept up the tradition, going from the Novice class to a 5 point major.

Betty stated Finalist had a poor rear (which may have been due to his problems as a puppy) and a tendency of his ears to prick as he grew older, but added he had excellent head quality, neck, shoulder, coat texture and color.

He did not have as long a siring career as he might have, as he was only 7 when he died of an infection brought back from a show. However, he sired 9 Champions including a blue merle bitch who was for many years the second top producing bitch of all time: Ch Larkspur's Replica of Pocono ROM. (Her record of 8 Champions including 1 ROM sire has since been exceeded by Kismet's Rubaiyyat ROM with 13.) Finalist is Line CHE Part I and Family 2 Part V.
