History
Ch Merry Meddler of Pocono CDX ROM was a tricolor dog, whelped January 2nd, 1937. He was bred by Elizabeth Whelen and George Haines, and owned by Elizabeth Whelen. He sired 21 Champions, 15 of them being out of a single bitch, Ch Larkspur of Pocono CDX ROM. Meddler was Line CHE (Pan) and Family 2 (Fairy). His breeding combined the best of the Anahassitt imports with Miss Whelen's own import, Ch Peabody Pan. To quote from Miss Whelen's book, No Greater Love: (Alpine Press)
"Merrymaker's first litter was with Merry Memory of Pocono; she had three puppies whelped January 2, 1937. From the beginning the tricolor male looked good and he was retained and named Merry Meddler of Pocono. Merry Memory completed her Championship in 1937, had several other litters and was then sold to Add-A-Bit Kennels in New York State. Merry Meddler had a very small dark eye, almost black. I never remember him producing anything but dark eyes in all the blues he sired. [But see her comments on Meddler's son Ch Bil-Bo-Dot Blue Flag of Pocono ROM] He had a lovely muzzle and skull, and although his ears could have been smaller he carried them well. Meddler's coat was profuse with a good undercoat, but it lacked the correct harsh texture. He was a very elegant dog, about 15 inches, with an excellent rear that he put on all his off-spring. [Note that Betty stated that her rear was Larkspur's weak point.] He had an excellent neck and shoulders and was moderately long in body. Meddler hated shows and getting him finished was not easy... Meddler was an extremely protective dog and would not allow anyone to touch anything in my car or any of the dogs that were benched beside him at shows. He would bite! He and Syncopating Sue and Merrymaker were all on the sharp side..."Remember this was a time when spooky Shelties were almost the norm, and the Pocono dogs were generally noted for their sound tempraments. Meddler was also an outstanding obedience dog - one of the very few among the top producers - so his "sharpness" probably derived from protectiveness rather than fear biting.
Meddler was line CHE Part I and Family 2 Part IV.
